Dissolve the Illusion - Discover your true Self

Laya Yoga—the Yoga of dissolution or absorption—draws upon the subtle and energetic principles of Hatha and Tantric Yoga. Its practices may include Asana, Pranayama, Bandha, Mudra, Mantra, Yantra, Meditation, Nada, Kosha awareness, and Kriya. Together, these methods work with the subtle dimensions of the practitioner, including the Nadis (energy channels), Chakras, Prana, Kundalini Shakti, the elements (Tattvas), and the senses.

The purpose of Laya Yoga is not simply to awaken energy, but ultimately to guide the activity of body, breath, energy, senses, and mind toward deeper states of absorption, inner stillness, and unification. Practices of purification, energetic balancing, mantra, sound, meditation, and inner awareness progressively prepare the practitioner for this process.

In contemporary Western Tantra terminology, these inwardly focused practices are sometimes associated with White Tantra and can also provide an important inner foundation for the more relational and embodied practices sometimes described as Red Tantra.

Kundalini Yoga and Laya Yoga are closely related streams of practice. Kundalini-oriented methods emphasize the awakening and direction of Kundalini Shakti through the Nadis, Chakras, and Sushumna, while Laya emphasizes the deeper process in which awakened energy and mental activity are gradually absorbed into meditative awareness. In this way, Kundalini practices can form an important part of the broader journey toward Laya.

The Laya Yoga journey is organized here into four progressive areas of practice.

  1. Nadi & Kriya Yoga - Preparation and Purification: In the initial stage of Laya Yoga practice, emphasis is placed on understanding the Nadis or subtle energy channels, purification of both the physical and subtle aspects of the practitioner's being. Bhuta Shuddhi purifies the five elements within the body, while Chakra Shuddhi focuses on cleansing and balancing the energy centers (chakras). These purification practices create a harmonious foundation by removing blockages and imbalances, allowing for the smooth flow of energy and preparing the practitioner for deeper spiritual exploration. The body becomes a more receptive vessel, capable of channeling and directing energy toward higher states of consciousness. Additionally, Kriya Yoga which involves breathwork, physical movements, and visualization, accelerates the movement of energy throughout the body, facilitating spiritual evolution. This practice enhances vitality, clarity, and inner transformation, supporting the practitioner’s journey toward a deeper connection with the divine.

  2. Nada Yoga - Sound and Inner Awareness : Once the body and energy channels are purified, the next stage of Laya Yoga involves attuning to the subtle sound and vibration of the inner self. Nada Yoga, the practice of listening to inner sounds, helps to quiet the mind and expand awareness. The practitioner learns to tune into the vibrational essence of existence, shifting from the distractions of external noise to the subtle, internal sounds that guide the mind into stillness. This awareness of sound, both external and internal, helps to deepen meditation, enhance concentration, and foster a connection to the divine presence within.

  3. Kundalini Yoga - Activation and Transformation: Kundalini Yoga focuses on awakening the dormant spiritual energy known as Kundalini, which lies coiled at the base of the spine. Through meditation, mantra repetition, and specialized breathing techniques, practitioners awaken and raise Kundalini energy through the central energy channel (sushumna). As Kundalini ascends, it purifies and activates the chakras, leading to profound spiritual experiences and ultimately, union with the divine consciousness.

  4. Laya Yoga - Absorption and Unification : The final stage of Laya Yoga is the culmination of all previous practices. This stage is about absorption, where the individual self merges with the universal consciousness. The practitioner experiences the dissolution of the ego, transcending the limitations of the individual mind and body. The energies awakened and harmonized throughout the journey now lead to a profound state of unification, where the practitioner feels a deep connection with the divine essence. This is the ultimate experience of spiritual realization—where the boundaries between the self and the universe dissolve, and the practitioner experiences oneness with all that is.

These stages represent a systematic progression within Laya Yoga, guiding practitioners towards spiritual realization and self-transcendence through purification, sound, dynamic practices, and the awakening of divine energy. Each stage builds upon the previous one, leading practitioners deeper into the mysteries of consciousness and the realization of their true nature.
